Verizon Communications, the nation's largest regional phone company, reached a deal Sunday night to acquire MCI Inc for about $6.6 billion in cash and stock, beating out rival bidder Qwest Communications.

The deal, the latest merger in the rapidly consolidating telecommunications industry, was approved by the boards of both companies late Sunday night according to executives close to the negotiations.
